| franck andré jamme and toadhouse both use simple disorganizing devicesto enliven the perception and meaning of their words and the letters that compose them. each construct texts that delight reason to ponder and examine. toadhouse is formally more humorous and inspired with his arranging of the letters and words. his material is graphite on gessoed canvas or paper glistening with the rich dense depth of that raw material complete with smudges and erasures indicative of the action and urgency of the public service announcement scribed by the artist's hand. frank andré jamme composes his words within a form found on small gold leaves tucked into the closed hands or mouths of some of those found in ancient roman graves. runons of a sort, disfiguring and reconfiguring meaning in their continuity. while the antecedent was a strict form forming lines of only equal numbers of letters, jamme takes the liberty to let the letters of the final word end wherethey do, and amongst the aplomb of these stragglers lies the weight and levity of how ancient and now, as well as east and west mingle. the texts are etched onto small framed mirrors, deflecting the reflecting viewer for its content. franck andré jamme will read from his newly published book of these tablets at 4 pm, saturday december 13, 2008 at feature.  |
